President John Dramani Mahama has told Parliament his government has invested a whopping $ 2 billion dollars in the health sector across the country.
He said the investment were in the area of infrastructure, equipment and human resource.
Presenting the State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, President Mahama said under his administration, 6000 hospital beds have been provided, 4 regional hospitals, dozens of polyclinics and thousands of CHIPS compounds have been built.
Moreover, the construction of the university hospital in Legon, upgrade of the Ridge hospital and the expansion of the Police and Tamale hospitals are at various stages of comp0letion.
He told Parliament that these investment were being made in the health sector because as social democrats, the ruling National Democratic Congress believes that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation, hence the massive investment in the sector.
He said also that in order to train more doctors, the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, has been built to accommodate qualified student who do not gain admission to the University of Ghana Medical School due to lack of access.
