8 galamsey operators arrested

The police have arrested five Chinese and three Ghanaians for engaging in illegal mining activities (galamsey) at the Amamprama forest belt under the Forestry commission of Asante-Bekwai.

The Deputy Forestry manager for Bekwai, Mr Emmanuel Agyapong Donkor, who confirmed the story, said galamsey activities are affecting the forest and must be curtailed.

They were arrested as they excavated the forest for gold.

The suspects were arraigned before court on Monday February 1.
