The Astro turf at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra is in a bad condition, Class Sports can confirm.
The rubber surface is worn-out and sunk in, making the surface unfavourable for the sport.
Information gathered from some officials when Class Sports visited the site was that locals were brought in to patch up the pitch but that has not been useful.
The secretary of the Ghana Hockey Association, Daniel Mensah, speaking to Class Sports, said the turf would expire in two years and, therefore, called on authorities to construct a new turf.
“We tried to repair it but it was not completed because the base material, which is ground rubber, had expired. But in two years the whole turf will expire and we expect the authorities to change it,” he stated.
The Theodosia Okoh hockey pitch was inaugurated on July 6, 2012 by late President John Evans Atta Mills and hosted its first major tournament in the same year, but has seen little repair works since its inauguration.
