The Black Stars of Ghana beat Mozambique 3-1 in the first leg of their 2017 Nations Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday March 24.
The Ghanaians got the opener courtesy a low drive from the left by Anderlecht winger Frank Acheampong, after just four minutes of play.
Acheampong could have hit a brace in the seventh minute when a pass from stand-in captain John Boye reached him but he blasted wide in front of goal.
Mozambique had a chance to equalise when Captain Eles Pelembe sneaked past John Boye and Jonathan Mensah to pounce onto a pass, but his feeble shot glided slowly out of touch.
The Ghanaians took control of the first 45 minutes with good possession and passes and ended the first half leading with a lone goal.
The Black Stars began the second half on a high. John Boye got the second goal from a goalmouth melee.
The goal resulted from a corner kick that fell to Atsu. Atsu struck a shot on the edge of the penalty box but was headed off the line by a defender. The ball bounced off John Boye, who was lurking in the area, and entered the net.
Two minutes later, in the 58th minute, Aston Villa striker Jordan Ayew, who was quiet on the day, got onto the end of a through ball from Atsu. Ayew ran past two defenders and lobbed the ball over the onrushing Mozambican goalie for a goal Coach Avram Grant could not help but applaud.
Mozambique pulled one back, courtesy a header from Apson Manjate. Manjate firmly planted home a cross from the right past the outstretched arm of Ghanaian goalkeeper Razak Braimah.
The second leg of the qualifiers will be played in Maputo, Mozambique on Sunday March 27.
