The Greater Accra Regional Branch of The Narcotics Control Board has gathered that, the usage of illicit drugs nationwide, is extremely common in the Ashiaman Municipality as compared to other communities. Speaking at a durbar as part of activities marking this year’s World Drug Day, The Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Board, Esinam Ofei Ansah, called for stakeholder involvement to eradicate the menace of illicit usage of drugs within the Metropolis and Ghana at large. According to her, the sale of wee biscuits and toffees is an indicating factor. She stressed that The Municipality, has been a ready market for the sale of illicit drugs at the expense of children and the community in general. According to The Divisional Police Command, the Municipality has over twenty five flash points within the Central Business District. Reports indicate that, illicit drugs peddling within the identified flashpoints of The Central Business District, has become increasingly worried and a threat to residents of the area. The Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Board, Esinam Ofei Ansah, reckoned that, stakeholder participation is key in the controlling the menace if not totally eradicated.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Ibrahim Baidoo, said, Government is committed to expanding the National Youth Employment Programme, as part of efforts to disengage the youth from illicit drug peddling in the area. In a felicitation message, The Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Ashaiman Lawyer Alfred Kwame Agbesi, recounted how he nearly got himself in the use of illicit drugs. According to him, he was brainwashed by his colleague in the lead up to his common entrance exams 1967. The Member Of Parliament said, although, The Municipality, has made strides in fighting the menace, a lot more needs to be done.
