Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have dispatched additional personnel to Kato, a village near Berekum in the region after one person died and three others got injured in a gun battle.

The clash erupted when one faction of residents mounted road blockades to protest the installation of a chief for the village. In the ensuing confrontation, led to gunshots leading to a fatality.

Regional Police PRO for Brong Ahafo ASP Christiopher Tawiah, in an interview, pointed out that no arrests had been made at the time, but police presence has been increased to forestall further violence.

“The police have moved in swiftly from the Regional Command to beef up the strength of the local police after they got the information. The area seems to be calm after the shooting incident.

“Eventually three people namely Edmund Opoku Appiah, 34, Hamza Mohammed 39, and Yaw Dennis Kyere, 18, all sustained gunshots and were rushed to Berekum Holy Family Hospital, where Appiah died on arrival. Hamza Mohammed has also been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to the severity of the injury. Dennis Yaw Okyere is on admission at the Holy Family Hospital,” ASP Tawiah said.

According to him, the misunderstanding can be traced to 16 years ago when the queenmother [of the town] wanted to install a chief to the detriment of the other gate resulting in conflict.

“Three days ago when the youth in the area heard that the queenmother, Nana Afia Ababio, had nominated her [preferred candidate] for installation as chief, the violence erupted,” the police officer added.
