FIFA WC Qualifier: Wrap of Africa Teams

A total of 22 goals were scored in the opening round of the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers (African Zone) in 10 matches played over three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

There were only two goalless games, between Ghana Black Stars and Uganda Cranes in Tamale as well as Gabon against Morocco.

Democratic Republic of Congo produced the best result, winning 4-0 at their gigantic Stade Des Martyrs in Kinshasa over visiting Libya.

Ivory Coast’s 3-1 victory over Mali in Group C also stood out.

DRC’s Dieumerci Mbokani, one of the players with a brace on the opening round scored the fastest goal of the round (after just six minutes).

There was one own goal coming from Salif Coulibaly of Ivory Coast against Mali.

Egypt and Nigeria recorded identical 2-1 score lines, the only countries to pick victories away from home over Congo Brazzaville and Zambia in Kintele and Ndola respectively.

Nigeria had two 20-year-olds who play in the English Premier League and both scored – Alexander Chuka Iwobi (Arsenal) and Promise Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City) in their 2-1 win of the match watched by the Zambian number one citizen Edgar Lungu.

There were two 1-1 draws (Burkina Faso against South Africa) as well as Algeria versus Cameroon.

Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Egypt all recovered from a goal down. The latter were the only country to win the game 2-1 after falling behind whilst Burkina Faso and Cameroon forced draws against South Africa and Algeria respectively.

At 43 years old, Egypt’s veteran goalie, Essam El-Hadary was the oldest player over the weekend taking part in the qualifier and Senegal’s Ismaïla Sarr, 18, who plays at French side Metz was the youngest squads-man among all the 20 countries.
