Workers of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have given a one-week ultimatum to the National Media Commission (NMC) for the immediate dissolution of the Board of the corporation.
To back their demand, the workers last Friday prevented top management members who are perceived to be loyal to the board from gaining access to the premises of the corporation.
They have also called for all workers who were employed by the embattled board and paid through GBC’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to leave the corporation with immediate effect.
Embossed on the red band was the inscription, “NMC Act Now to Save GBC from this Killer Board.”
Some of the workers from the regional offices of the corporation could also be spotted in red attires. At the time of the visit, some staff members could be seen going about their usual routine.
The leadership of the local TUC said that they would not relent in their efforts to ensure the dissolution of the board and all “illegal workers removed so that the right thing will be done for GBC to come back to its feet.”
They further stated that the appointment of some top executives of the corporation without clearance amounted to an illegality that had drained their IGF.
“The last straw that broke the camel’s back is that for some time now, it is the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) that appoints finance managers for GBC. But this particular board sacked the appointee from the CAGD and appointed their own person.
“We think this act is not in good taste and that is why we have renewed our call for the dissolution of the board because the IGF is not even enough and cannot, therefore, be expended anyhow. Go to the studios and see how bad the place is,” a source added.
As of the time the radioxyzonline left the GBC premises at around 1:20 p.m., the local TUC leadership and some of the corporation’s management were preparing to hold a meeting to discuss the way forward.
The agitations for the removal of the board started in February 2016 over various allegations of mismanagement of resources and illegal recruitment of staff.
