Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Hannah Serwah Tetteh has debunked assertions that government received an amount of money as bribe from the United States to accommodate the Yemeni nationals from Guantanamo Bay.
She hinted that it is rather unfortunate that some Ghanaians have taken to social media to accuse the Foreign Ministry and President Mahama of taking a bribe from the U.S government.
“There is no money that has been paid either to myself or President Mahama or to the government of Ghana ostensibly as a bribe to take these people into Ghana”, said the minister in an exclusive interview with Kwaku Vander-Pallen on the XYZ Breakfast Show.
She explained that Ghana has several programs with the United States which attracts funding and Ghanaians should not misconstrue that for bribes. She said,“We have and will continue to have several programs with the U.S where they are already giving funds to Ghana on a regular basis; this is not new.
It is true that some funds were made available for these people’s resettlement and that was discussed with National Security. The U.S has something called the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and they are not allowed to do those kind of things otherwise their own congress will take them on.”
