Tension is brewing in the Ashaiman Municipality following what some opinion leaders perceive as feet dragging by the governing New Patriotic Party and its appointing authorities, to appoint a Municipal Chief Executive of Ga-Dangbe decent.
Regent of the area Nii Annang Adzor, told a news conference the stool has submitted five competent NPP members to be considered for the position but expressed regret that there is still no positive response.
According to Nii Annang Adzor, none of the names submitted to the party was considered to appear before the Vetting committee, something he said was very unfortunate.
“We would have calmed down nerves in our ranks if any of the names submitted to the party was shortlisted for vetting” he stated.
The Regent explained that the appointment of a Municipal Chief Executive of a Ga-Dangbe decent, will help insulate their culture, norms and tradition from further deterioration.
He debunked assertions that, their request is tantamount to tribal politics and said their action is basically to protect their cultural heritage especially because the cosmopolitan nature has become a serious threat to indigenous activities, which cannot be accommodated at the expense of their children and future generation. “Our request is to preserve our culture and nothing more”. He stated emphatically.
Nii Annang Adzor later told XYZ News’ Ibrahim Obeng mensah, that the appointment of Numo Adinortey Addison, as Municipal Chief Executive for the area by the Late President Mills’ government, had a heavy influence on activities that respected the Ga culture.
Quoting portions of the 1992 Constitution, he said, the appointment of an MCE is expected to be done in consultation with Chiefs in every community but said the NPP unfortunately has disregarded the
“We the stool cannot laud over the NPP our favorite candidate but rather give them the option to choose among the list of five competent NPP members who shares in the vision of both the President and Ashaiman as a whole.
He lamented the disregard to their interests and said the Chiefs of the area will no longer countenance any attempt to appoint a none Ga-Dangbe as their next Municipal Chief Executive.
The Branch Organizer of the New Patriotic Party in Emaohie Electoral Area of the Ashaiman Municipality who doubles as Secretary to the Ga-Dangbe Association, Paul Kwao, also affirmed the Association’s support for the position of the Chiefs.
According to him, the NPP is likely to face their wrath should they disregard their demand.
Meanwhile XYZ News is picking information that the NPP is likely to name one of the proposals made as a nominee for consideration by the Assembly.
