Journalist Goes into Hiding Over GH¢11,000 Fraud

It has emerged that Fred Oduro, a self-styled sports journalist of Accra-based Vision One FM, who is wanted for fraud, has gone into hiding.

The accused person’s disappearance followed an Accra Circuit Court’s bench warrant for his immediate arrest in respect of the case.

Fred was last seen at the court on May 5 last year after the court presided over by Jennifer Ahmed Myers on November 18, 2015 granted him bail.

His continuous absence from court compelled the trial judge to issue a bench warrant for his arrest a year after his bail.
When the case was due for hearing last week, the situation was not different as Fred was nowhere to be found.

The trial judge adjourned hearing until March 13. Fred has however denied the charge of defrauding by false pretences.

It is the case of the prosecution led by DSP Alex Odonkor that Fred in May 2014, with the intent to defraud, allegedly defrauded one Linda Osei of the sum of GH¢11,000 under the pretext of securing a Canadian visa for her.

Narrating the series of events to the court, DSP Odonkor said the complainant was a student resident at Tanoso in Kumasi while the accused claimed to be a sports journalist resident at Ashaley Botwe in Accra.

He said in May last year Linda wanted a Canadian visa to enable her join her brother, one Yaw Osei, in Canada.

As a result, the prosecutor said, Linda was introduced to Fred who promised to help and charged her the said amount as visa documentation fee.

The court heard that Fred procured a Ghanaian passport for Linda and said that because the passport was new, he wanted to obtain a South African visa to enable her get the Canadian visa.

DSP Odonkor said later Fred called Linda and told her to be ready to travel to South Africa, as her visa was ready on July 1, 2014, before she could proceed to Canada.

The police officer stated that before the date, Fred called Linda saying that her passport was missing and that he could prepare another one for her to be submitted to the Canadian Embassy.

DSP Odonkor said ever since, the accused had been playing hide and seek with Linda until he was arrested on September 17 last year at Oman FM when he went for a panel discussion.

He said Fred, in his caution statement, admitted the offence and refunded GH¢800 cash and went into hiding.
