The maiden One Ghana for Peace & Unity Walk on Saturday 9th July, was given a surprise boost when the National Campaign Coordinator for the National Democratic Congress, Hon Kofi Adams joined walkers along the route.
Organisers of the walk sent a late invitation to the NDC stalwart just a day after the party announced their campaign team. Invitations were also sent to all other political parties and selected civic organizations and non government agencies (NGO’s).
Although there was no official response from Mr Adams, he joined the Peace and Unity walkers almost unseen at the start of the trail at 7am. However once spotted, curious participants and some excited youth, rushed to shake hands and take photos with the man noted for his gentle but hard and no nonsense reputation.
As there were no planned official speeches for the march, Mr Adams interacted with participants along the route. The organisers of the walk, One Ghana described the event as a success that exceeded all expectations.
Students, lecturers, workers and other citizens from the catchment area (Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency) participated in the 7 kilometers walk.
Those from beyond, including students from Tema, Ashaiman, Dansoman, Nima and even a beach soccer team from New Takoradi joined the One Ghana train.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Walk was when the train was joined by other walkers and Keep Fit groups along the route. Representatives from government (NDC) and the leading opposition party (NPP) also participated in the Peace and Unity Walk.
Most notable was the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Tema Central Hon Ebi Bright who brought along 20 members from her constituency.
Also in action was the NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency Hon Delali Brempong.
A coordinator of One Ghana Juliet Nettey said the planned monthly peace and unity walks would be revised to every two weeks due to the demand across Ghana for more of such activities. Participants were treated to a health breakfast by Bar Naas.
Medical support and health checks were provided by Del International Hospital & Fertility Centre with support from Ghana’s leading pharmaceutical firm Curist Pharma.
Ideal Finance donated Gh5,000 towards security escort, PA system, printing of banners and leaflets plus media coverage.
The community for the next walk on Saturday August 6th would be announced in due course. The entire walk was captured by Blue Icon Media with the latest drone technology.
