Mahama: Take Advantage Of ECOWAS Trade Protocols

President John Mahama has thrown a challenge to local manufacturers to take advantage of ECOWAS protocols on trade to venture into other markets within the region.

According to the president, agreements such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme which Ghana has signed on to, allow for companies within the bloc to export their products to neighboring countries duty free when they satisfy certain conditions.

Citing the importation of cement from Nigeria as an example, Mahama said on Volta Star Radio in the Volta region that there was nothing wrong with the practice and urged Ghanaian industrialists to do same.

“So we have ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme [ETLS], if your product has more than 60% of local raw material then you can export it into another ECOWAS country duty free that’s one of the reasons why we have a company like Dangote exporting into the Ghanaian market, so I will encourage Ghanaian traders to export into Burkinabe market, Nigeria etc,” Mahama said.
