Match Preview: Ghana vs Uganda

The Black Stars begin the ‘Road to Russia 2018’ with a difficult encounter in Tamale against the Cranes of Uganda in group D (today) Friday.

The Cranes go into the game against the Black Stars confident after being buoyed by the recent qualification for Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time in 39 years.

But the Black Stars superiority in qualifiers will surely intimidate the Cranes, especially qualifying to AFCON 2017 unbeaten.

However, Iceland-based midfielder Tonny Mawejje, scorer of Uganda’s only goal the last time the Cranes visited Ghana believes it is an achievable dream to qualify for the World’s biggest football tournament but first, they have to deal with each game as it comes.

Meanwhile, Ghana coach Avram Grant admits it will be a tough game against The Cranes who have lost just once in the last six competitive meetings between the two sides but says his side has the quality to win the game.

“I don’t think it will be an easy game but our target is same, to win and do everything to be in Russia,” he said. “We are playing against a very strong side but we have the quality to overcome them. The most important thing is we finish first in the group,” he added.

Team News:

Ghana Black Stars have a clean bill of health ahead of the duel with all foreign-based players in camp and landed in Tamale on Wednesday for final preparations.

But they are without the injured of Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah and striker Andre Dede Ayew who were not considered.

Captain Asamoah Gyan who made a return from injury has reportedly been assertive in training and convincing about his return to form and thus, remains a big puzzle for Grant on whether to start him or not.

Men to Watch – Mubarak Wakaso and Jordan Ayew.

These men keep on growing and are gradually becoming deadly upfront and therefore the Ugandans must in their defense be alert after Jordan claiming the top scorer in the AFCON qualifiers.

Man to Watch – Farouk Miya

The Standard Liege man has recently become Uganda’s most threatening player going forward. He is daring, aggressive and has a heart of lion. Always in right places at right time and will love to add to his tally of three goals already in the campaign.
