Telecommunications giant MTN has announced that customers can begin enjoying its high-speed, 4G data service on their mobile devices beginning June 2016.
“We have done the soft launch effective April, so we have the service available in Accra and all the regional capitals. We expect to have a full-scale commercial launch of the 4G by June this year,” Chief Executive of MTN Ebenezer Asante indicated at a recent interaction.
He explained that some test runs have been carried out with good results, but customers will need to change their SIM cards in order to enjoy the service.
It would be recalled that the National Communications Authority (NCA) announced that Scancom Limited, operators of MTN, had emerged winner in the tender process for one frequency spectrum lot in the 800MHz Band for mobile services.
This was the result of the process which began early this year in May, a statement from the NCA said on Wednesday December 2, 2015.
It said: “Four companies submitted applications, however, three (3) companies were unsuccessful in their efforts.”
According to the NCA, “The transparent process, which was conducted under high security, was overseen and managed by an independent auctioneer, KPMG.”
Subsequently, Scancom Limited was awarded one lot of 2 x 10 MHz in the 800 MHz Band.
