Four persons are in the grip of the police for allegedly lynching a 42-year-old man accused of stealing a motorbike at Oduman, near Ablekuma in Accra.
A source close to the police said the four suspects are known notorious land guards who terrorise residents of Oduman and its environs.
The source said on October 14, 2016, the four men who are all residents of Oduman, called Baba on phone and accused him of stealing a motorbike and asked him to meet them near the Oduman clinic.
“As soon as Baba arrived at the clinic, the four, who were waiting under a tree, stripped him naked and beat him mercilessly,” the source said.
After the victim had sustained multiple injuries, the four, with the help of others who also mistook Baba for a thief, dragged him on an untarred road and attempted to set him ablaze with a used car tyre and petrol.
But for the pleadings of some onlookers, the source said, the suspects would have burnt Baba alive.
They are said to have left the helpless Baba in a bush close to the clinic where he was found dead by the police.
The four persons who went into hiding were arrested eight days later from their hideouts while investigations were ongoing.
They have since been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and murder.
