Sack K’si Mayor: Asanteman C’cil

The Asanteman Council has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to sack Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu with immediate effect.

According to the Council, it can no longer tolerate the Mayor nor work with him.

The call follows allegations that Mr Bonsu failed to meet with members of the assembly and the council to resolve issues surrounding the ongoing construction of the new Kejetia market.

Some market women felt they would lose their shops in the construction process and as such appealed to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene. The Asante overlord, in turn referred the matter to the Asanteman Council, to resolve it.

The mayor is alleged to have written a letter to the council in the name of the assembly members indicating that outstanding issues with the market women had been resolved.

However, the assembly members wrote to the council saying they knew nothing about the letter written by the KMA boss because the assembly has no presiding member, and, therefore, cannot act as a functioning assembly.

At a meeting on Monday July 4, between assembly members and the Asanteman Council chaired by Otumfuo’s Akwamuhene, Akyeamfuor Kwame Akowuah, the council felt disrespected by the KMA boss and called for his immediate removal.

The council’s call for Mr Bonsu’s dismissal dovetails into similar demands made weeks and months ago by some residents of the city. Last month, some traders and assembly members adopted the use of billboards to drum home their request for the mayor’s removal.

The billboards, mounted at Ahodwo, Airport, and Santasi roundabouts, as well as Adum and Manhyia, bear the image of the mayor with the inscription, ‘Kojo Bonsu Must Go’.
