Sec. expert : Private Security Sector Needs More Attention

Ghana’s corporate security sector needs to be given more attention if the nation has any chance of averting future attacks by terrorists, this is according to Security management expert Captain Asare Bediako (rtd).

The security expert is worried many corporate security personnel take up the job as last resort for employment.

Early this year, Ghana’s neighbor Ivory Coast was attacked by terrorist groups, a development that alerted Ghana to step up its intelligence gathering.

The security threat in the sub-region has compelled some hotels and other tourist facilities in the country to increase security alertness on their premises.

But Captain Bediako believes the training that has been given to most of these security personnel at the facilities need to be upgraded in order to enable them detect real threats.

Speaking to one Accra based FM at the sidelines of a corporate security management course for selected personnel across the country at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Captain Bediako said many managers of the security firms springing these days know very little about the security sector themselves.

“The level of professionalism is not the best. A lot of people who are in corporate security now are not applying the best of practices in the execution of their duties,” Captain Bediako noted.

Some of the participants expressed delight at the training, saying it has equipped them adequately for the job ahead.

“We need to do more background checks. People want to join this private security because they are home doing nothing. Security is not just putting a figure there but also the training is very important,” one of the attendees of the training program who wants to remain anonymous told Starr business.
