Spio: No Discrimination Against Local Cement Firms

Trade Minister Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah has rubbished accusations by local cement manufacturers that his outfit is promoting unfair competition in the sector.

The cement manufacturers have accused the Trade Ministry of issuing a permit to some foreign firms to import 500,000 metric tons of cement into Ghana without their approval.

The local manufactures association also claim Dr Spio-Garbrah acted illegally when he deliberately signed and issued permits to SOL Cement from China and Fujian from Korea, to import 500,000 tonnes of the product into Ghana.

Reacting to the claim in an interview , Dr Spio-Grabrah described the claim as false.

“Why should we reduce import when other companies still want to invest in the country”, he said, adding that the demand for cement is not static considering the number of projects in Ghana.

“They should not make false accusation against public officials. If I have flouted any law, there are channels of addressing it than going to organize press conference to throw dust in the air and express frustration,” he noted.

The association which comprises GHACEM Limited, Tema; GHACEM Limited, Takoradi; Diamond Cement Ghana Limited, Aflao; Savanna Diamond Company Limited, Buipe and Western Diamond Cement Limited, Takoradi, are threatening to lay off workers if the situation is not addressed.

Ghana currently imports over 1,000,000 metric tonnes of cement annually.
