The Tourism Safety and Security Initiative, Ghana (TOSS), in collaboration with The Ghana Tourism Authority, and the Ghana Tourism Federation will on on May 25 to May 28, 2016 host the First International Tourism Safety And Security Exhibition Conference. The exhibition is under the theme, “Promoting Tourism Through Safety, Security And A Clean Environment.”
The event, which will take place at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, was launched yesterday and its expected to bring together stakeholders in The Tourism Industry as well as players in the Country’s security sector to deliberate on effective ways to ensure the security of tourists and tourism centres nationwide.
The Chairperson of TOSS, Mrs. Doreen Owusu-Fianko in her address, stressed the need for the country to pay more attention to securing the environment by keeping it clean. This, she said, will attract more tourists, into the country. She said: “As at now, we are all assuming that all is well, but from today’s presentations and the areas we are looking at, apart from physical security, with the environment, we can see that we have a long way to go. If we’re talking about tourism, we need to do a lot more about our destination.”
“My real concern is to have a clean environment. Health wise, I don’t think all is well with us. Our air is polluted with diseases all over……The moment the destination is labeled as unhealthy, no one comes to the destination, so we all have to get our acts right,” she lamented.
She added that TOSS is engaging stakeholders, in the tourism industry, to ensure that awareness message of tourism safety and security reaches the persons concerned.
Director-General of Operations, of The Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, who chaired the event, cautioned players in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, to pay extra attention to security, and report possible threats. He said: “We have also spoken to our people in the hotels. The hoteliers should also be careful. Their security should be well focused. If you are searching somebody, search the person very well…….. Wherever you are, the people you employ in your Companies, make sure that you know their backgrounds, their character, their movements, everything.”
The launch also saw in attendance the La Mantse, Nii Kpobi Tettey Tsuru III, representatives from the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Acting Executive Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Charles Osei Bonsu, President of the Ghana Federation of Tourism (GHATOF), David Nana Anim, and some key players in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
The Executive Director of TOSS, Kofi Yankah tells XYZ News, the exhibition is a must attend for players in the Tourism Sector. He stressed that persons interested in exhibiting their goods or services should contact the Offices of TOSS Ghana, or visit their website, www.tossghana.com
