Vegetable Farmers in Keta to demonstrate over high electricity tariffs

Vegetable Farmers in Ketu South, Keta and Anlo Constituencies, are lacing their shoes, to demonstrate against The ECG and the Government, over what they call, exorbitant electricity tariffs.

They say the streets protest, slated for 31st of this month, is expected to be the biggest ever demonstration to hit the coastal area of The Region. The farmers say, they now pay between, GHs 1,500.00 and GHs 2,000.00 instead of GHs 500.00, as of last year.

Many fisher folks have now joined The Farming Business, because the fishing industry, in the area, is no longer attractive, due to low catching of fish during the past decade.

The people of the southern zone, of The Volta Region are known for vegetable farming: Pepper, Onions, Tomatoes, Okro, Garden eggs, Carrots and spinach, among others, aside fishing.

In an interview, with XYZ News, The Keta Municipal Public Relations Officer, of the Vegetable Farmers, Seth Jumpah, said, all the vegetable farmers at Aflao, Denu, Agbozume, Adafienu, Keta, Anloga and other Communities, within the zone, will join them for the demonstration.

According to him, The Electricity Company of Ghana, disconnects them without prior notice, if they don’t pay on time. This is affecting their crop production, he added.
