A man here has been ordered to perform community service after he severely assaulted his wife’s cousin for demanding payment for underwear garments which were sold to his woman.
Qiniso Moyo of Matshetsheni village in Gwanda pleaded guilty to assault charges when he appeared before magistrate Sheila Nazombe.
Moyo was lucky to escape a prison sentence for fracturing the right arm of his wife’s 42 year old cousin.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison but six months were wholly suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. The remaining 12 months were wholly suspended on condition that he completes 420 hours of community service at Matshetsheni Primary school within three months.
The court heard that on the 19th of January this year, Emma Muchena went to Moyo’s homestead to demand R130 which was owed by the accused’s wife who had acquired a petticoat, panties and a scarf on credit from her.
Upon arrival, a misunderstanding arose between Muchena and the accused’s wife and in the process Muchena repossessed her scarf from the wardrobe and went away.
When Moyo arrived home his wife narrated the incident to him. He then armed himself with a log and proceeded to Muchena’s homestead were he hit her several times all over the body in the process fracturing her arm.
Moyo pleaded, saying Muchena had provoked him by scattering clothing belonging to his late child who had passed on a week before the incident when she forcibly opened the wardrobe to recover the scarf.
